Our universe is humongous and mysterious. Every day, our scientists are learning something new about our constantly expanding universe. However, we bring you a few interesting facts about our universe that are sure to leave you in awe!
12A Throwback Sky
When we look up at the stars, we are actually looking at the past. This is because of the immense time taken for the light of the star to reach down to the Earth for us to see. Many times, this throwback can even go up to 100 years and more and there is even a possibility that many of the stars we see, are actually dead in present time.
It’s common knowledge that the planets in our solar system revolve around the sun. However, did you know that the sun, as well as our whole solar system revolves around the center of the Milky Way, i.e. our galaxy? It is estimated that our sun orbits around the center of our galaxy once in every 225 million years!
10A Dizzying Spin
Our galaxy, the Milky Way is constantly spinning like a pinwheel at roughly 168 miles per second.
9An Interstellar Journey
Voyager 1, a space probe, was launched in 1977 by NASA. While it’s original mission was to study the outer planets of our solar system, it’s extended mission changed to studying the outer reaches of our solar system. In 2013, it was announced that Voyager 1 had exited our solar system. It is the farthest spacecraft, as well as man-made object from Earth.
8Yes, Our Universe Has An Average Color
And it is beige-ish white and named as ‘Cosmic-Latte’.
Astronauts can grow up to 2 inches taller in space! The human body can grow up to 3 percent when in space. Several studies say this is because of the lack of Earth’s gravity pull that allows the vertebra to expand and relax, thus allowing the height increase. However, note that astronauts usually return to their normal height within a few months of coming back to the home planet.
6Time Is Slowing Down
The rotation of the Earth is slowing down. This is happening at the rate of roughly 17 milliseconds per century. if you thought time was moving slow, well, here’s why! 😛
5Surrounded By Debris
Space debris is a real thing and the Earth is surrounded by more than 5,00,000 pieces of it! Pieces of space debris, or space junk as it is also commonly referred to as, can travel at speeds of up to 17,500 mph!
4The Smell Of Space
Astronauts say that space smells like seared steak, welding fumes and hot metal.
3Spaghettification Is A Thing
It refers to the stretching of objects into noodle/spaghetti like shape in a very strong non-homogeneous gravitational field such as a black hole. The interesting take away from this fact? If you fall into a black hole, you will be spaghettified!
2Stars vs. Sand Grains
Everyone knows the universe is full of stars, but do you know how many? As per a rough estimate, there are 1 billion trillion (1000000000000000000000000) stars in the universe. It’s said that the universe has more stars as compared to the sand grains on the beaches on Earth. Now that’s perspective!
1When The Milky Way Looks Small In Comparison
Our galaxy the Milky Way is incredibly huge. 100,000 light years in diameter to be precise. However, this is nothing in comparison to the biggest galaxy in our observable universe – IC 1101, which is 6 million light years in diameter!
