In 2002, a troop of heavily armed British marines landed on a beach, thinking it to be Gibraltar. However, a map reading glitch and bad weather actually had them land at La Linea, a Spanish town instead.
It was only when they got down, they were met with confused faces of the fisherman and two equally bewildered police officers. The troops retreated within 5 minutes, after being made aware of their mistake, and one can imagine, quite embarrassed.
The Spanish foreign ministry thankfully down played the whole event calling it a harmless error that wouldn’t have any effect on their negotiations to resolve the Gibraltar issue.
Next time you take a wrong turn, remember this! t’s bound to make you feel better!
